Making Inferences

Fostering inferences while reading…

In order to reinforce making inferences, we must explore the following prompts with students:

“Infer as you read!”
“Make predictions while you read!”
“Draw conclusions as you put information together!”
“Reflect while you read!”

Example Activity:  Reading a book while doing what Iggy the Inferring Iguana does!

Pre-Reading
What do you know about puppies?
•Prior to reading the story, asking students questions that relate their previous knowledge (schema) to the text can help them connect with the literature and develop a better understanding.

What do you think the story will be about? Who is Boomer?
• Students can infer or predict using the illustrations on the cover of the book.

Remember class, what does Iggy the Iguana do?
•Infer, make predictions, draw conclusions, & reflect

During Reading
Some questions to ask while reading Boomer’s Big Surprise (Periodically pausing the story):
•What might be the strange things in the kitchen?
•What might all these new things be used for?
•Why was the bundle place “gently” on the floor?
•How do you think Boomer feels at this point in the story?
•Do you think anyone will ever play with Boomer?

Post-Reading
Possible questions to ask once you have finished the reading:
•Did Boomer’s feelings change throughout the story? How so?
•What do you think of the ending?
•Were your predictions correct?

When first introducing students to inference activities, questions can be answered as a whole class.  As students become more familiar with the process, students can work in small groups or independently.

Students can even using Graphic Organizers to map out their thinking - record their predictions to check them later.  The following are examples of Making Inferences tracking graphics.  The KWL-Chart is another great way to activate prior knowledge:
